Instagram showed people too many videos last year, Adam Mosseri admits

We certainly have some photographers who are upset. I want to be clear: While we’re leaning towards video, we still value stills. Photos will always be part of Instagram.

I think in 2022 we were too focused on video and pushed the rankings too far and basically showed too many videos and too few photos. We’ve been in balance ever since, so things like how often someone likes photos vs. videos and how often someone comments on photos vs. videos are about even, which is a good sign that things are balanced. And so, to the extent that there’s more video on Instagram over time, it’s going to be because that drives overall engagement more.

But photos will always be an important part of what we do. And there will always be people who love and are interested in finding photos on Instagram and elsewhere. And I want to make sure we’re very clear on that.
